O’s Notes: Marsalis is a musician’s musician. He is a collaborative bandleader, a producer and a saxophonist who has personality. As such he has gained popularity as a musician and on television! He has performed both contemporary and traditional jazz, pop and R&B. Metamorphosen is his latest CD release in a quartet. Joey Calderazzo (p), Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts (d) and Eric Revis (b) each contribute 2 or 3 originals to go along with Branford’s “Jabberwocky”. The free spirited groove is inspired by Thelonius Monk and includes an exceptional cover of “Rhythm-A-Ning” that is well placed in the middle of the session. Branford’s quartet has an unencumbered voice coming from ten years of playing together. Their creative juices flow unselfishly especially on “The Last Goodbye”. Eric’s solo on “And Then, He Was Gone” flows naturally into “Samo” for what is perhaps the best of the set!
