O’s Notes: Gene (g) leads a quartet with Harvie S (b), Tyshawn Sorey (d) and Tigran Hamasyan (p). Gene wrote all eight compositions, a creative fusion blend. Ess takes his time on the melodies but he manages to insert explosive phrases to accent his points. “Discovery In Three” is a prime example. There is strong interplay between all of the musicians especially on “Trance Chant” and “Sufficient Reason”. We enjoyed Hamasyan’s work on “Messiaen Shuffle”, one of the best of a good set.
