O’s Notes: Jazz sax man Vincent Herring steps out of his normal modern jazz vibe to the world of 1970s funky jazz-fusion. It’s a Herbie Hancock type of groove plus a few warm ballads. The band is Earth Jazz, a unit that has performed together for many years now including Joris Dudli (d), Anthony Wonsey (p) and Richie Goods (b). Each of them contributes originals to the CD to go with fresh arrangements of classics “Naima”, “Soul Leo” and “Morning Star”. Dudli’s “Tom Tom”, Wonsey’s funky “The Thang” and the mellow “Never Forget” by Herring are among the best in this energetic set. This is a CD that will expand Herring’s audience luring fans of contemporary jazz without alienating his traditional base.
