O’s Notes: Moving Out was recorded in 1954 a few years after Sonny’s debut as a leader. We find him confident and polished going head to head with Kenny Dorham (t) on fleeting passages with Elmo Hope comping on piano. Percy Heath (b) and Art Blakey (d) round out the core quintet. The program is mostly burners along with “Silk ‘N Satin” a ballad and “Solid”, a blues number. Thelonius Monk (p) plays on the finale “More Than You Know”, a cool ballad with Tommy Porter (b) opening with a fine solo and Arthur Taylor keeping time. This is prime time Rollins, a significant chapter in the Rollins book. At this point we know he’s special and realize that he’ll get even better with time.
