O’s Notes: New Cuban Express is pianist Valera’s sixth album as a leader. He has great chops that we enjoyed from the opening title track. The program celebrates Cuban music while infusing contemporary fusion and funk elements. The band is a quintet that is up to the task and they impart a great deal of energy in a very balanced set. The music is easy to warm up to and really swings especially on “Upwards”, “Poly” and “Makuta”.
