O’s Notes: Ken Peplowski has reached his prime as a master of both tenor sax and clarinet. He has decided to release a new album only when he has something of worth to say. This turns out to be a fruitful approach on Noir Blue! He has a cadre of musicians who contribute mightily to the set. Pianist Shelly Berg and drummer Joe La Barbers each contribute noteworthy original compositions. Jay Leonhart weaves his bass through each song providing a cohesive bond that makes the session sizzle. We enjoyed the bubbly sense of swing on “Riverboat Shuffle” and the warmth of Ken’s sax on “Love Locked Out”, just two of many enjoyable tunes. Well done!
