O’s Notes: Bassist Gregg assembles a sextet with John Bailey (t), Luis Perdomo (p), Ej Strickland (d), Stacey Dillard (sax) and Yosvany Terry (sax). August wrote the entire program and he keeps our attention moving from fierce bop beats on the first two tracks before soothing us a bit on “One For Louis” featuring Bailey. He’s moves into a cool vibe for “Modal Tune” including a moving bass solo in the thick of it. The interaction between the brass and rhythm section was exceptional on that song. We liked the fleeting piano work on “Sixth Finger” with the accompanying brass accents. They finish out with “Crescent Mood”, our favorite of the set and the simmering blues of “Cascading”. This is an impressive outing!
