O’s Notes: Pat wrote, arranged and produced Orchestrion, an effort that has him playing all instruments: pianos, marimba, vibes, drums, a wealth of percussive devices and of course guitar. He opens with the title track, a syncopated, upbeat energetic number that sets the stage for the entire five-song set. The tempo changes but the spirit carries on. We enjoyed the counter currents of “Expansion” and the myriad of percussion instruments used on “Spirit of the Air”. While Metheney still enjoys the traditional band groupings, this solo effort has extended his reach and imagination. And for the listeners, we have yet another of his masterpieces!
