O’s Notes: Empirical are a British band presenting their second release. The members are Nathaniel Foley (sax), Lewis Wright (vibes), Tom Falmer (b), Shaney Forbes (d) and special guest Julian Siegel (bass cl, sax). They play a rather free form of neobop. Farmer and Foley wrote most of the music except couple of Eric Dolphy covers. In fact this is a dedicated effort focused on and inspired by Dolphy’s work. The best example of this is a lengthy, well-developed “Dolphyus Morphyus”. If you dig that groove, this CD will feel really good to you. It is a modern day rejuvenation of free jazz. We anxiously await Emperical’s next take on tradition.
