O’s Notes: Guitarist, producer Gordon Grdina shares billing and composing with bassist Mark Helias and pianist Matthew Shipp for Pathways, his new release. It is a heavily improvised, eclectic set with lots of angular approaches. Some is challenging but much is approachable and engaging. We liked the contrast and dynamics on the title track, the energy of “Ossicles” and “Synapses”.
