O’s Notes: Hopkins is one of the most popular country blues singers ever. He created hundreds of songs, many spontaneously. He had a lot of true stories to sing about, a descendant of slaves raised in the ghettos of Houston and living through the ups and downs of being a musician. His stories are humorous, like “You Is One Black Rat” and “Blues In The Bottle”. Between these two songs alone it seems like the women gave ole Lightnin’ a rough time. It is easy to see why he was a very popular entertainer on the blues circuit.
