O’s Notes: Jane plays flute and sax but she’s not playing the smooth jazz that this commonly suggests these days. This Guantánamo Blues project has a lot of depth and substance that shows up the title track with Jane displaying excellent solo skills. Guantánamo is an isolated city in Cuba that is rich with tradition including the music. There remains a strong African influences as well as an infusion of popular music and jazz. The blues on “No Money, No Chica” are as engaging as any. We also enjoyed the mysterious feel of “New Orleans Under Water”. Changí music is the native sound that she records here with a local band infused with several jazzmen from the north, notable Howard Johnson (tuba) and Dewey Redman (sax). There is a wealth of percussion as well but the variety of styles is sure to appease most listeners at some point.
