O’s Notes: Guitarist John Stein is cooking on Raising The Roof. He gets started right away opening with an accelerated cover of Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream”. This is just one of several transformed arrangements to go along with a couple of Stein’s originals. The international quartet includes Brazilian drummer Zé Eduardo Nazario, Japanese pianist Koichi Sato and Boston-based John Lockwood on bass. This is their second recording as a team and they are very tight as a unit. Stein shows his mellow side leading the way on “Invitation” as they take a breather from the heat. We also liked John’s work on the mid-tempo bossa nova of “Vivo Sonhando” and the cool swing of “Beautiful Love”.
