O’s Notes: This is a tribute to the late Michael Brecker that would make him proud! Jim McNeely composed and arranged seven tunes that trace Michael’s career. The band is the George Robert Jazztet, ten fine musicians along with guest Randy Brecker (t). George plays alto sax and Robert Bonisolo plays tenor. They open with “Burn” a true reflection of the high energy that Michael pushed through his tenor sax! The program hits Brecker’s start in the late 1980s and progresses through his time with Horace Silver, Steps and of course his famous collaboration with Randy as the Brecker Brothers. “Into Thy Hands” is a beautiful ballad and one of the best of the set though we were blow away by the opener.
