O’s Notes: This project is a dedication to many of the influences that Bassist John Patitucci has incorporated into his style. The band is also a memory of sorts, born many years ago with Patitucci, Brian Blade (d) and Joe Lovano (p) rehearsing with an absent pianist. It felt good then and feels even better now accentuated with Rogerio Boccato (perc) or Sachi Patitucci (cello) making guest appearances on four tracks. The true genius of the recording is capturing the essence of many styles. There are funk, fusion, bebop and free elements. John’s originals are cast in the spirit of Monk, Rollins, Trane, Hubbard, Brecker, Hancock, Shorter and more giving the session breath, depth and variety. We liked “Messaien’s Gumbo”, “Mali” and “Meditations” best. It is all new music but has familiarity based on respectful touches of past styles.
