O’s Notes: Cuban pianist Fabian Almazan resides in New York and brings a global perspective to the jazz scene. His music has elements of Latin and classical music woven into the fabric. Camila Meza (g) adds vocals on several selections and the rich string section softens the effort. Wayne Shorter’s “The Elders” and Arlen Harold’s “Stormy Weather” are sprinkled among 7 Almazan originals. A Rhizome is a mass of subterranean roots that can offshoot separate surface plants (like ginger). Almazan draws an analogy suggesting that music and humanity both have common roots but many different varieties. The music on this album is a fine illustration of this concept.
