O’s Notes: Rise and Shine is a bit of free fusion, heavily syncopated neobop and a couple of reduced tempo tracks like “SP”. Leader Matt Renzi plays sax, clarinet, oboe and flute. He also composed all of the music. Dave Ambrosio (b) and Russ Meissner (d) play on all selections with Ralph Alessi (t) and A.R. Balaskandan (mridangam) appearing on 3 and 2 tracks respectively. We enjoyed the vocal percussion by Giridhar Udupa on “Noasis” and Alessi’s work on “Animals, Come Forth”. Renzi stretches the envelope with this project and comes away with a good set.
