O’s Notes: Greg Abate plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones along with flute. Tim Ray (p), John Lockwood (b) and Mark Walker (d) join him to for a modern jazz quartet on Road To Forever. Greg blows a soulful melody on “Whaling City Sound”, a dedication to Neil Weiss, the CEO of the label. He continues to blow sweet sax melodies on the title track and his band collectively delivers a heartfelt tribute on “Farewell Phil Woods”, Abate presents two well-executed contrafacts “Take The Crowell Train” based on “Softly in a Morning Sunrise” and “Red Fish Blvd” a take of “On Green Dolphin Street”. The new melodies take these classic harmonies into new space!
