O’s Notes: Cowboys and Frenchmen are a young quintet based in New York. Pianist Chris Ziemba, bassist Ethan O’Reilly and drummer Matt Honor are a tight rhythm section fronted by saxophonists Ethan Helm and Owen Broder. Each of the reedsmen contribute three originals complemented by two covers. We really enjoyed the first two selections “Jazz Styles” and “King Barry”. Both are syncopated but Barry is more the relaxed. “More” includes a taste of free jazz. These are a few highlights on Rodeo, a promising debut.
