O’s Notes: A Ronin is a masterless samurai, being released by their master as a result of death, financial ruin or simply being cast off. Jansen equates the plight of jazz musicians as Ronins in today’s continuously evolving society. He leads two trios both with pianist Mamiko Wantanabe and either Mike Boone or Amanda Ruzza on bass and Chris Beck or Dorota Piotrowska (d). The music has a cool swagger to it especially B.J.’s throaty baritone sax. The walking bass and drummer accents make the music pop. The pace is varied but we preferred the upbeat and bluesy tunes like “Brother Sid” and the title track.
