O’s Notes: Roxy is another new female jazz saxophonist and she comes with her own straight ahead groove that is not the cookie cutter smooth jazz sax many others have adapted. Coss shows a diverse writing style including soulful gospel ballads like “Enlightenment” while swinging on “Wandering One” with a solo from Kate Miller on flugelhorn. We liked the Latin vibe on “A New Time” with Roxy playing flute. She concludes with “July”, a tune with R&B undertones. There is a lot of diversity on her debut and also an ample display of talent as a performer and a writer. Coss has the potential to expand in many ways. We’ll keep our ear to the ground.
