Jazz Ruler Type: Bebop
O’s Notes: Amina plays piano but this CD contains a lot more than that. Listen to “Denial”, an intense number that surfaces the power and warmth of Nico Schepers (t) and Kurt van Herck (ts) out in front of Figarova. She plays well when the pace is hot as well as on ballads like “Photo Album” where Bart Platteau also does a fine job on flute. In both cases, her notes are well stated and deliberate. Wiro Mahieu (b) and Chris Stirk (d) round out the rhythm section of a fine band. Amina wrote all of the music and it is very fresh. It is also varied in approach including a suggestion of free jazz on “Rage”. We were impressed with the depth and variety of her work that is easy to engage in.
