O’s Notes: European pianist Ricardo Fassi assembled the New York Pocket Orchestra to record his original compositions. Alex Sipiagin (t), Dave Binney (alto sax), Gary Smulyan (baritone sax), and Andy Hunter (tb) add rich harmonies to this project. They have all performed with him in the past. Fassi called on guest artists Essiet Essiet (b) and Antonio Sanchez (d) to anchor the rhythm section. They make their presence felt on “Moving Line” and “Shuffle Bone”. Sipiagin takes off on “Seven Loops” followed by Binney, an example of the punctuated brass throughout the set. Fassi shines on the title track, a dynamic introspective solo. This is a collective effort with strong performances from all.
