O’s Notes: Smashup is a jazzy rock-fusion by the contemporary quintet known as the Jazz Punks. They are Sal Polcino (g) Robby Elfman (sax), Danny Kastner (p), Michael Polcino (b) and Hugh Elliott (d). The opener “Foleo”, morphs back and forth between rock-fusion and swinging jazz. That theme continues through all ten selections making listeners change up their moods with the band. We really liked the combinations on songs like “Creep Train” based on “Take The A Train” and “Led Gillespie”. The approach is unique and beats the crap out of playing straight covers. We adjusted after the third track and really enjoyed their daring approach and polished skills.
