O’s Notes: Sophisticated Ladies is a celebration of some of the best jazz standards performed by bassist Charlie Haden and his quartet with Ernie Watts (sax), Alan Broadbent (p) and Rodney Green (d). The ‘Ladies’ are six powerful voices that add a special dimension to Charlie’s Quartet West that also incorporates a lush string section on the vocal tracks. Cassandra Wilson, Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Renée Fleming and Ruth Cameron make the ballads special. We especially enjoyed Norah on “Ill Wind” and Cassandra on “My Love And I”. The instrumentals are also strong highlighted by the upbeat finale “Wahoo” capping a balanced set.
