O’s Notes: Kenny continues to push the envelope with 8 new compositions plus the opener, a new arrangement of Cole Porter’s “What Is This Thing Called Love”. Whenever Kenny is playing sparks are sure to fly with upbeat, high-energy beats. He slows down the pace a little for “Native Tongue” where his saxophone melody approaches the smooth nature of a ballad. He quickly returns to upbeat bop on “Chief Blackwater” followed by “Doc Tone’s Short Speech” which has a hint of calypso. Our favorite is “Gendai” with it’s rousing spirit. Garrett is in his zone and he commands a presence throughout the set.
