O’s Notes: “Fathead” just keeps producing strong CDs one after the other. It comes at a surprise to a visual observer of this 70 year old stately gentleman. But those who know him and know his music know he’s got a lot of energy in his sax and flute. This time out he’s with John Hicks (p), Bryan Carrott (vibes), Winard Harper (d) and Buster Williams (b). Newman’s brand of jazz is a more contemporary, cool, bebop that has wide appeal. He writes most of the music, keeping it fresh. We like the way he’s groovin’.
