O’s Notes: Chris leads a quartet inspired by John Coltrane. They recorded this session back in 1995 yet it was only released in late 2012. We can assure you that it benefitted from the aging process! Jazz Expression is free fusion in a mellow mode, and for many jazz fans that means skip it. The 19+ minutes “Trane’s Pain” is true to form but this is one worthy of consideration to a broader audience, especially on “Utsukushi” and “Snowy”. Both have gentle melodies that are complex yet easy to embrace. Alpiar does well with these originals. While this was a performing band in the 1990s, he has a new crew called 800 Giants. We’ll be watching!
