O’s Notes: Hailey opens up The Keeper cooking on “Scraps”. She composed 8 of the 11 modern jazz tracks and has great chops. She swings along with her band, a quartet including Takeshi Ohbayashi (p), Mark Whitfield, Jr. and bassist Max Moran. They all shine on “Straight Up”. Darren Barrett adds a mellow trumpet on three selections, notably “Ravine”. “Balance” and the cover of “Night and Day” slow the pace but not the passion as Hailey presents a well-balanced, strong session.
