O’s Notes: The quartet is Joe Barbato (p), Ugonna Okegwo (b), Steve Johns (d) and Alexander on sax. They play modern jazz that swings. McCabe wrote five of the songs with Barbato contributing two and Johns another. They present a full soundstage pushing into free space on “Village Walk” before capturing a Caribbean vibe on “Jugo”. They swing hard as on “Yours” then play a soothing ballad, “A Cry From The Rain Forest”. But we like them best on the finale “Salvo” with Barbato adding accordion accents.
