O’s Notes: Pianist Claire Ritter leads a sextet with Ashima Scripp (cello), Toni Naples (accordion), Richie Stearns (banjo), Jon Metzger (vibes) and Takaaki Masuko (d, perc). Ritter composed all of the 18 selections. They are centered on the flowing, free spirit of water. Most of the music sounds symphonic without the density of an orchestra. It is rather cleansing which is in part the intent. Highlights are “Bolero on The Charles” and the more piano-centric “Blue Ridge in Watercolor”. Ritter combines many styles and vacillates between jazz ballads and some tunes that are more classical. The result is a performance that will be appealing to classical music fans and those desiring a light jazz approach.
