O’s Notes: Pianist Bill Cunliffe and flutist Holly Hofmann have worked together for 20 years. They perform half of this program as a duo and are in excellent form. But they take it up a notch with four special guests, each making a special trio. The first is with Regina Carter on “Star-Crossed Lovers”. It is a rich exchange between Holly and Regina on the melody. Terell Stafford is up next playing a sweet trumpet line on “Three’s Company”. The harmonized melody with Hofmann is warm and inviting but doesn’t overshadow Cunliffe who adds a dashing solo midway through. Ken Peplowski (cl) does a fine job on “Reunion” and drummer Alvester Garnett puts some punch into “Sweet Andy”, one of our favorite tracks. This is a relaxed set with cool variations on a true formula. Those familiar with the work of Hofmann and Cunliffe will be delighted with this release.
