O’s Notes: Thirty years of chart busting contemporary jazz places this band among the most popular acts in history. This is their 21st release anchored by original members bassist Jimmy Haslip and Russell Ferrante (keyboards) with Will Kennedy (d, keyboards) and Bob Mintzer (sax). We remember our first exposure was at a live concert at the University of Florida in 1985. They won us over then and they continue to have the magic remaining fresh through the years. This is their debut on Mack Ave. Records and it is strong. “Magnolia” has gospel blues overtones and features a solo and guest appearance by Robben Ford (g), one of the original jackets! We also enjoyed “Like Elvin” and the warmth of “I Do”.
