O’s Notes: Triumph of the Heavy is a live two-volume set featuring veteran jazz saxophonist Marcus Strickland. The first CD is a quartet with drummer E.J. Strickland, Ben Williams on bass and pianist David Bryant. The groove is centered on bebop with each of the players surfacing their talents. The second disc loses the piano for a more intimate trio set that is more of a showcase for Strickland as he solos freely to his heart’s content. The dynamics are good and best appreciated in a quiet room to appreciate all of the nuances.
