O’s Notes: Pianist Pat Coil draws on inspirations for True North. He opens with the upbeat “Sheets” remembering a musical date in Cleveland with another pianist. He moves on reflecting on his days in Hollywood; then tributes to fellow musicians including “Sco”, for guitarist John Scofield; and wrapping up with the title track inspired by Steven Covey’s novel with the same name. This is modern, contemporary and fresh jazz.
