O’s Notes: Saxophonist and composer Felipe Salles traveled to Uganda in 2011. He researched history, wildlife and the relationship of music in the Ugandan culture. It was the inspiration for this release, a suite divided into five movements, each depicting one of Uganda’s powerful animals. The songs range from the calculated deliberate sound on “The Elephant ” and the racy “Leopard” to the forward, upbeat beats of “The Lion”. Salles does a fine job depicting the character of each animal with music as well as incorporating musical Africanisms. All the while the music is accessible, enjoyable and fulfilling performed by an octet that includes fellow reedsman David Liebman and several accomplished African musicians.
