O’s Notes: This was Art’s last concert culminating his last tour. It took place at the Kennedy Center in DC as a part of the Kool Jazz Festival. The band was David Williams (b), Carl Burnett (d) and Roger Kellaway (p). George Cables, Art’s regular touring pianist was unavailable for this tour. The final performance was very good but incomplete as there was a mix-up in time. We never got to hear the scheduled finale, “Straight Life” that night as Pepper was cut following a strong showing on clarinet, “When You’re Smiling” dedicated to Zoot Sims. Pepper died 16 days after that last song. We are fortunate to have some strong memories.
