O’s Notes: Saxophonist Tony Malaby leads a trio with Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello, electronics) and John Hollenbeck (d, perc). They play eleven free spirited compositions that could easily be used for a mystery movie sound track. Nine are Malaby originals plus “Two Shadows” by Angelica Sanchez and Bill Frisell’s “Waiting Inside”. The SACD audio is excellent capturing all of the nuances of to cello as well as the depth of the stage. The music is provocative, rather eerie at times. The use of unusual percussive instrumentation adds to the mysterious sound notably with “Fly on Wall” and “Jackhat”. Tony let’s his imagination fly on this one!
