O’s Notes: It is indeed a bit unusual to see a woman perched behind congas, timbales and other percussive instruments but Mayra quickly makes you forget about any reservations you may have about women in this role. This recording was a family project with Jorge Casales (bongos), Jesus Ramon Casales (p) and Ramon Casales singing on “Paisajes Cubano” which really kicks! There are a wealth of other musicians playing including guest artists Regina Carter (v) on “Pipo”; Carmen and Curtis Lundy (vocals and b) on “Take The Time”; and Jon Lucien (g, vocals) on “Xiomara”. The title track includes strong solos from Mike Rodriguez (tb) and Robert Rodriguez (p). Mayra also sings on a couple of tracks notably “For All We Know” capping a fine set.
