O’s Notes: The Offense of The Drum is a new movement in the fusion of Latin, Cuban and American jazz anchored by pianist Arturo O’Farrill. His Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is a vibrant band that creates a dazzling landscape with many high points. They open with “Cuarto De Colores” featuring composer Edmar Castañeda on harp to set the stage. DJ Logic raps the spoken word on “The Came” a story of Puerto Rican immigration and pride. Vijay Iyer (p) composed “The Mad Hatter” accentuating the off beats in an ode to Arturo. The collection is yet another fine example of O’Farrill pushing the envelope and with success on his Motéma debut!
