O’s Notes: Carlos is a Brazilian guitarist. Carioca is a mix of solos, duets and some multiple instruments takes on traditional Brazilian music. The other players are Nilson Matta (b), Deduka da Fonseca (d), Marcílio Lopes (mandolin) and singer Danny Rivera, all notable Brazilian musicians. Carlos selects many of the best choros like “Renunciar” and “Brejeiro” for this album. The friendly dueling between Barbosa-Lima and Lopes on songs like “Odeon” is energizing. The collection of eighteen songs is an accurate portrayal of the roots of contemporary Brazilian music.
