O’s Notes: This is a celebration of the sambas of Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi. Kenia is a singer from a small town just outside of Rio de Janeiro. This is her second album. Her voice is deep and robust with gentle tones. Caymmi’s music is special and Kenia does a fine job vocalizing it. The band behind her includes Leo Traversa (b), Airto Moreira (perc), Jay Ashby (perc) and Eric Susoeff (g). Although most of the lyrics are sung in Portuguese, this will not prevent listeners from enjoyment. Her melodic tones blend in with the band over fifteen delightfully relaxing songs. That is the true spirit of samba!
