O’s Notes: Latin jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo makes a party out of the first volume of his Latin Jazz Project by inviting a wealth of guest artists to the mix! Sheila E (congas), Bob Mintzer (sax) and Sandy Cressman (vocals) are just a few of musicians on the guest list. There is a cool bass solo from Marc van Wageningen on “Coral Kets” also featuring Elena Pinderhughes on flute. David K. Mathews handles most of the piano duties and shines on “Vera Cruz”. Ray Vega adds a sharp trumpet solo on “Santa Cruz” with spicy beats from Orestes Vilanó (timbales) and Michael Spiro (percussion). We also enjoyed “Southern Side” featuring flutist Norbert Stachel with Mathews switching to organ! But lest we forget Ray whose melodies are meaningful and impactful making this is a smoking set!
