O’s Notes: Manuel comes off of a large ensemble outing to this trio set featuring Clarence Penn (d) and Hans Glawischnnig (b). They set the stage on “Rhythm-A-Ning” with a rousing solo by Penn complementing Valera’s fleeting work across the keyboard. It’s a live engagement at Montreal’s Diese Onze with freshly arranged classics like “Darn That Dream”, “Whisper Not” and “Evidence”. Valera’s dashing improvisations are much more than fiery accelerated scales. He plays notes with meaningful, new takes on old themes leading to an enhancement of the original without losing the impact.
