O’s Notes: This is a powerful duo with Bebo on piano and Javier playing bass. If you don’t play close attention you may not realize the absence of drums and more musicians. They play some of Valdes standards: “Con Poco Coco” and “Bebo’s Blues”. But things generally roll along on “Andalucía”, “Siboney” and many of the tunes Valdes has mastered. Colina is locked in whether using the bow or his fingers to pluck the strings. This a memorable set. The live audience at New York’s Village Vanguard was most appreciative. At 86, Bebo has not lost his touch.
