O’s Notes: Drummer, arranger Richard Baratta has a sizzling band with David Kikoski (p), John Patitucci (b), Jerry Bergonzi (t-sax), and Paul Rossman (perc). Off The Charts focuses on tunes that somehow faded into obscurity, now cast in a fresh light. We liked Kikoski’s dazzling work on “Herzog” opening a spirited session that is tempered by warm ballads like “Blackberry Winter” featuring Bergonzi. We also enjoyed “Afro-Centric” with Patitucci anchoring the groove on electric bass. He returns to double bass opening “Sombrero”. They wrap the session with “Out of This World”.
