O’s Notes: Gabriel moves closer to the Traditional side of the Jazz Rulerª with Swingin’ Affair. To start, there is more natural music with little or no electronic enhancements. The Big Swing Trio: Mark Diamond (b), Andy Weyl (p) and Paul Romain (d) establish a solid foundation for Hasselbach on flute and trumpet. We especially liked Gabriel’s work on “Slow Hot Wind” where he played both instruments masterfully. His trumpet playing is well articulated and silky. Guest vocalists Dee Daniels and Nancy Ruth do an exceptional job on “To Say Goodbye” (NR) and the bluesy “Kiss Me Baby” (DD). The program includes straight ahead, Latin, blues and cool ballads. This is a winner!
