O’s Notes: Frank was a well-established pianist and composer. Matt Balitsaris remixed two of his trio recordings to rekindle great memories of the late pianist. It is titled 2003-2006. The first volume is Lullabluebye with bassist Ben Allison and drummer Matt Wilson. They had performed many times in the past and their familiarity shows with their comfort and cohesion. They come alive on “Whirl”, swing on “You Only Live Twice” and the syncopated “Fubu”. Volume 2, Play is a peaceful encounter featuring Kimbrough with Masa Kamaguchi on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Trio two is together for the first time on this recording but they play like a seasoned unit. The best here are “Jimmy G” and “Regeneration”.
