O’s Notes: Drummer, composer and bandleader Phil Haynes is featured as an integral member of 4 Horns & What?, in direct exchange on each song. The Complete American Recordings is an extensive 3-disc set including 1989’s 4 Horns & What?, 4 Horn Lore from 1991, and 1995’s Live At B.A.M. Haynes, Paul Smoker (t), and Andy Lester (reeds, fl) appear on all three discs. Ellery Eskelin (t-sax) plays on the first two albums with John Tchicai playing tenor on the 1995 session. Clarence ‘Herb’ Robertson played brass on the last two sessions with Jo Daley playing low brass on the first. Each of the bands is an explosive and spontaneous leading to an engaging set. We liked the horn work, underscored and framed by Haynes on “Blues For Israel” and “A Lil’ Iowa Get-Down”, as well as many other of the 28 songs!
