O’s Notes: This dedication to the late Michael Brecker includes a trio of masterful saxophonists. The headliners are Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman and Ravi Coltrane, replacing Michael in the Summit, who also mourns the loss of his mother Alice last year. The cast includes a wealth of talent including Cecil McBee (b), Phil Markowitz (p), Randy Brecker (t) and Billy Hart (d). As with their last recording they are inspired by John Coltrane and include a few of his compositions, notably “Expression”. There are also seven originals. They open with “Transitions”, an engaging number written by Markowitz that caught our attention, as did Billy’s “Reneda”. Randy’s “Message To Mike” is upbeat, syncopated and full of energy in contrast to the peaceful tones of “Our Daily Bread”. The collection is a rebirth and a celebration of good music both old and new.
